Where to Try a Genesis Bowl

There are fifteen public Genesis Bowl studios in the world. One of them is in Glenarden, Maryland, and it is the only one on the East Coast north of Miami. If you have been trying to work out where you can actually sit inside one of these, this is the short answer.

The map

Fifteen studios, twelve countries

Cymatica, who build the instrument, keep a public map of where every bowl has been installed. At the time of writing it lists fifteen public studios and seven private placements across twelve countries. Private placements are homes and closed spaces — they show as a region only and do not take visitors.

Seven of the fifteen public studios are in the United States: two in Texas, two in Arizona, two in Florida, and Primal Coherence in Maryland. The remaining eight are spread across Canada, Mexico, Germany, Spain, the United Kingdom, India and Australia. The map itself is the authority, and it is worth checking — installations get added.

The East Coast has one

Both Florida studios sit at the bottom of the state, around Miami. The next public bowl going north is this one, in Glenarden, Maryland. After that there is nothing until you cross into Canada, where the only public studio is in Victoria, British Columbia — the opposite coast.

Which means that if you are in Washington DC, Baltimore, Philadelphia, New York, Boston, Pittsburgh, Richmond or anywhere in the Carolinas, this is the closest Genesis Bowl to you. Not the closest good one. The closest one.

Worth saying plainly

This is a fact about a map, not a claim about quality. There are extraordinary sound practitioners all over the East Coast working with instruments of every kind. What is unusual here is the specific instrument — a bowl large enough to sit inside — and at the moment, on Cymatica’s map, there is one of those between Miami and the border.

What you would actually be travelling for

A sound bath puts you near the instruments. Someone plays bowls, gongs or chimes in a room and the sound reaches you the way any sound in a room reaches you — from a direction.

The Genesis Bowl is thirty-six inches across and you sit down inside it. When it is played, there is no direction the sound is not coming from. It arrives through the air, through the floor of the bowl, and through the base of your spine at the same moment. That is the whole difference, and it is not a subtle one.

The longer version — the physics, what happens in the body, what people report afterwards — is on the Genesis Bowl session page.

Coming from out of town

Sessions are one-on-one by appointment, in a private studio in Glenarden, Maryland — about twenty minutes from Washington DC. Rough driving times, for planning:

If you would rather fly, three airports are close: Reagan National is roughly half an hour away, BWI about thirty-five minutes, and Dulles about fifty.

The standalone Genesis Bowl session runs forty-five minutes. If you are making a journey of it, say so when you get in touch — the bowl opens and closes every session at Primal Coherence regardless of modality, so it is straightforward to build a longer visit around it rather than drive four hours for forty-five minutes. What that looks like depends on you, and it is a conversation rather than a package.
